Nationality Law amendments enter into force

Organic Law No. 1/2026 entered into force on 19 May 2026. Article 6(1) now covers knowledge of culture, history, national symbols, fundamental rights and duties, and the political organisation of the state, alongside Portuguese language knowledge.

Point (c) provides for proof by test or certificate; this provision does not set a test format. Under Article 7(2) of the amending law, administrative proceedings pending when it entered into force remain subject to the previous wording of the law.

Article 4 of Organic Law No. 1/2026 gives the Government 90 days from publication to amend the Portuguese Nationality Regulation. That period is not a test launch date.
