Portugal: mainland and islands

Portugal includes a mainland part and the Azores and Madeira archipelagos in the Atlantic. To locate an island, first identify its archipelago and then its group. Proximity to another continent does not change the territory’s belonging to Portugal.

Start with scale

A map may show the whole country or just one part. Mainland Portugal lies in southwestern Europe and has a land border with Spain. The Azores and Madeira often appear in separate map boxes because they are distant Atlantic territories. These boxes help presentation; they are not different countries. Before answering, look for words such as “mainland”, “archipelago” or “island”. Each word sets the scale of the answer and helps avoid comparing different kinds of places.

Three Azorean groups

The Azores lie between Europe and North America. The nine islands form three groups: Eastern, Central and Western. São Miguel and Santa Maria form the Eastern Group; Flores and Corvo form the Western Group. Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial are Central. To study, draw three boxes and put each name in the correct box. Do not confuse three groups with three islands. The group organises location, while the island name identifies a specific territory within the archipelago.

Madeira: island and archipelago

“Madeira” can mean the island or the archipelago. The two inhabited islands are Madeira and Porto Santo. Desertas and Selvagens also belong to the archipelago but have no permanent population; conservation teams are not the same as a permanent town or settlement. VisitPortugal places Madeira about 500 km from the African coast. This approximate distance helps orient map reading. Being near Africa does not make these Portuguese islands another country’s territory.

One word changes the comparison

Cabo da Roca is mainland Europe’s westernmost point. The word “mainland” is essential: this comparison excludes Atlantic islands. The same care applies to mountains. Pico is Portugal’s highest mountain when all territory is included; Serra da Estrela contains mainland Portugal’s highest point. Do not choose an answer simply because you recognise a famous name. First read the territory being considered, then the requested characteristic: position, height, group or belonging.

Recap without memorising letters

Make a small tree: Portugal; mainland, Azores and Madeira; Azorean groups; island names. Then rebuild it without looking. Check yourself: which group includes Pico? Which pair forms the Western Group? Does Madeira always mean one island? The answers are Central, Flores and Corvo, and no. If unsure, return to the relevant section and source. Use the questions below to practise these relationships; this guide is independent educational material, without a promise of an examination result.
